Zerubbabel led the first wave of Babylonian exiles back to Yehud (Judah). As the Persian governor, he was instrumental in the reconstruction of the Second Temple in Jerusalem and was supported by the prophets Haggai and Zechariah. In nine live, online sessions, we will read the Hebrew portions of Ezra 1–6Haggai 1–2, and Zechariah 4, focusing on the most difficult words and exploring multiple options for translation and interpretation. We will also dip our toes into the Biblical Aramaic portions of Ezra and consider the portrayal of Zerubbabel in the apocryphal work 1 Esdras. Participants are encouraged to create their own translations and research new topics about this little-known figure and this fascinating narrative of return and rebuilding.
